FedEx sustainability strategy

Reducing environmental impacts, increasing efficiency, and creating value for our customers and team members.

Our sustainability efforts focus on four areas—aircraft efficiency, vehicle efficiency, sustainable facilities, and sustainable materials—each with its own challenges.

Challenge

Simply put, we use a lot of jet fuel. The fuel used to power our aircraft accounted for 60% of our reported emissions footprint in 2019 alone.

Action

We reduce fuel through the FedEx® Fuel Sense program, replace and modernize our aircraft fleet with more efficient planes, and revolutionize our operations with industry-leading innovations like biofuels.

Results

We’ve reduced aircraft emissions intensity by 24% since 2005, and we know we can do even better. We continue replacing older planes, exploring alternative fuels, and advocating for clean technology regulations.

Challenge

Our ground transportation fleet includes more than 180,000 vehicles—about 80,000 of which are company-owned and within our operational control—that burn a lot of fuel. In 2019 alone, vehicle emissions accounted for 29% of our total reported emissions footprint.

Action

We reduce miles driven and fuel used through optimized routes, best-practice driving behaviors, vehicle replacements with the latest efficient technologies, electric and alternative fuel vehicles, as well as autonomous vehicles, mobile command centers, and robots.

Results

FedEx Express vehicle fuel efficiency has improved almost 41% since 2005. Across our organization, we’ve cut fuel use and emissions thanks to fleet upgrades, efficient intermodal rail, advocating for regulations that support emissions reduction, and alternative vehicles.

Challenge

With more than 5,000 air and ground hubs, local stations, freight service centers, and retail locations, we have to make sure they operate efficiently to reduce their environmental impacts.

Action

From efficient facility design and construction, to certified environmentally responsible facilities, to lighting upgrades and on-site renewable energy, we are working to make our facilities more sustainable.

Results

Lighting retrofits and energy management systems saved 254 million kWh of energy in 2019, while solar and fuel cell technologies generated more than 36 million kWh of clean energy during the year.

Challenge

We deliver more than 15 million packages each business day, on average. FedEx-branded packaging—the familiar envelopes and corrugated boxes—is the largest volume of material we purchase at 72% of the total.

Action

We used 14% less packaging by weight in 2019 than the previous year. We minimize the materials used in our packaging, work with customers to optimize packaging size and weight, and maximize recycling to conserve resources, reduce waste, and lower transportation emissions.

Results

Our branded packaging is 100% recyclable and made of 45% recycled content. And, 99.8% of all paper purchased by FedEx Office in 2019 was third-party certified sustainable.
